Every year the saxophone department of the Conservatorium of Amsterdam organises a Festival and the SAX2014 was a huge festival! To celebrate the fact that Adolphe Sax was born exactly 200 years ago saxophonists and music lovers from around the world gathered at the Muziekgebouw aan het IJ / BIM huis in Amsterdam.
Key figure in all this: Arno Bornkamp – professor of saxophone at the Conservatorium van Amsterdam and inspiration for many many young musicians worldwide.
One of the activities at this festival was the performance of a huge saxophone choir, professionals and amateurs performing alongside. Lago was asked to write a piece for the occasion and he decided to write a three movement piece based on impressions from a secluded yet fascinating region in Spain (just north of Valencia) called ‘El Maestrat’.
