Update on Clarinet pieces

Yesterday I had a first run-through with Harmen de Boer, my friend and colleague at both the Netherlands Wind Ensemble and the Conservatorium van Amsterdam,  of the clarinet-version of Consecuencias. A very promising and interesting run-through. He will be premiering it with the Nostos String Quartet at the Lago@Splendor concert on March 28, 2016, at Splendor Amsterdam. The same concert will see a full performance of Ciudades for clarinet quartet by the NAKK and premieres of ‘Las Noches de Verano I, II and III’  in new versions for bassethorn and bass clarinet. For the ‘Noches de Verano’ pianist Jaap Wisselink will join the members of NAKK.
This will be a prelude to the Nederlands Klarinet Festival where my ‘Bosquejos del Bosco’  (sketches of Hieronymus Bosch) for solo clarinet will be performed by Arno Piters, E-flat clarinetplayer with the Royal Concertgebouw Orchestra. Concert on April 10, 2016, Muziekgebouw aan het IJ Main Hall, Amsterdam, 15.00 hours. World premiere. I just finished the last movement (of five) and I am very happy with the outcome. Looking forward to all these clarinet events very much!

A promise I made to the Amstel Quartet when I wrote my first 4 Ciudades was that I would regularly add a new city portrait… Well I did, but maybe less frequently than I had hoped; always too busy of course. Last year I added Köln (Germany; for the Signum 4tet) and now comes a…

  • New Works for Ties Mellema

Very bad news just after the 2015 summer.  My friend and colleague Ties Mellema – I wrote quite a few pieces for him and his Amstel Quartet and he has been a great inspiration over many years – has been diagnosed with Hodgkin’s disease. He is now being treated and his chances of recovery are…

  • Wind Quintet, BOST

One of the finest musicians I ever worked with is hornplayer Ron Schaaper (Residentie Orchestra The Hague; Netherlands Wind Ensemble). He also plays some lovely guitar and sings wonderfully, a typical specimen of a very handy and naturally gifted musician. (with a good sense of humor) Always wanted to write something for him and two…

Looking forward to hearing the ELLE Quartet and the ESMAE Big Band at the Academy of Music in Porto in the beginning of May 2015 at their annual Jazz Festival. ELLE and the Big Band will perform two of my Ciudades and I will give a short lecture on my music. I will keep you…

  • TIEF and Marijn Migchielsen

Last Monday Marijn Migchielsen and Rommert Groenhof premiered my TIEF! for two contrabass trombones at Marijn’s Masters Exam at Codarts Rotterdam, the Netherlands. And I could not be there….. (family reasons) I wrote the piece especially for this occasion. To miss one of the most outstanding bass trombone performances ever (at least that is what…
